Jérôme Borel (b. 1958, Gap, France) is a contemporary French painter whose practice is informed by his background in art history, inspired by cinematography, and influenced by artists like Francis Bacon, Gerhard Richter, Claude Rutault, and Bertrand Lavier. Largely self-taught, Borel later pursued formal studies in American contemporary art history at the University of Montreal, Québec. His work is held in important public and private collections, including the Fonds d’Art Contemporain, and Société Générale in Paris, France. He lives and works between Paris and Normandy. “I paint abstract representations with figurative shapes. Each work is a possible answer to the fundamental questions of our existence,” states the artist.
